Introduction to FCPPS

The Fishery Country Profiles Production System (FCPPS) Virtual Research Environment (VRE), implemented during the D4Science project and further expanded in D4Science-II, supports generation of fisheries and aquaculture reports. They contain a balanced, comprehensive yet brief, factual view of fisheries and aquaculture in a country; they are used to facilitate a quick understanding of the situation of the sector in a country, and as source for regional and global sector status and trends reviews.

The production of country profiles requires complex aggregation and editing of continuously evolving multi-lingual data from heterogeneous sources. Availability of the FCPPS Virtual Research Environment permits updating and web-publishing these vital reports as frequently as the community requires, while also creating a framework that facilitates the introduction of new data sources. FCPPS is led by the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture department.

D4Science-II is dynamically extending this VRE, profiting from the larger set of resources that will become available. By exploiting the interoperability offered, the FCPPS VRE facilitates the requested data sharing across fishery, biology, commodity, and taxonomic information systems that have already embraced the sharing approach, such as the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Furthermore, it will be possible to maintain at least some of the intermediate data generated when producing the relevant country reports, which are very valuable to scientists but are now discarded. The end goal is to both serve and receive a greater variety of data to cover more countries and serve more communities.

Note: This scenario responds to the concrete demands of the scientific community, which plans to make the final outcome of D4Science-II available in its own production working environment at the end of the project.
