Paper presented at the 12th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries

ECDL 2008A paper titled "An Extensible Virtual Digital Libraries Generator" was accepted for the 12th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2008, held in Denmark on 14-19 September 2008. It was presented by Leonardo Candela during the "From Content-Centric to Person-Centric Systems” session on 16 September.

The paper describes the design and implementation of the Virtual Digital Libraries (VDL) Generator, a tool to simplify and automate the Digital Library (and the Virtual Research Environment) development process. The tool adopts a technique based on the modelling of the VDL implementation problem (i.e. the identification of the pool of resources needed to satisfy the users expectations) in terms of a generic search problem. Thanks to this approach, the resulting tool can be easily adapted to different application scenarios. The design principles and the resulting VDL Generator constituents are also discussed. The experiences of implementing and exploiting such an innovative service in the context of the Diligent and D4Science EU-funded projects were also reported along with future plans for its consolidation.

In addition to the traditional paper presentation, the authors were invited to participate in the Poster and Demo session. A large number of conference participants visited the dedicated booth to get more information on the presented technology and the related D4Science project.
