D4Science present at the 4th GRID & e-Collaboration Workshop – Digital Repositories

4th GRID & e-Collaboration Workshop – Digital RepositoriesD4Science was present at the 4th GRID & e-Collaboration Workshop – Digital Repositories, which was hosted by ESA/ESRIN (Frascati, Italy) from 25-26 February 2009. The two day worshop focused on:

  • Earth Science Digital Repositories;
  • Data Management and Access in Digital Repositories;
  • Emerging Standards for Interoperability of Earth Science Digital Repositories.

Considerable time was devoted to round table discussions about interoperability across e-infrastructures, standards, emerging technologies and services for the Earth Science repositories. Pasquale Pagano from ISTI-CNR presented D4Science Infrastructure data management capabilities during the round table on "Interoperability across e-Infrastructures: Are standards good enough for interoperation across disciplines?".

The presentation highlighted that D4Science is building a scientific data e-Infrastructures empowered by a collaborative environment that exploits the gCube technology. The D4Science infrastructure enables the on demand creation of Virtual Research Environments (VREs). A VRE is a digital environment that supports researchers across disciplines in the process of creation, validation and exploitation of data, information, and knowledge as individuals and as groups, supporting collaboration and fulfilling their needs in ICT resources. Thanks to the adoption of standards D4Science is playing a mediator and integrator role by aggregating and giving access to many heterogeneous digital repositories.
