D4Science contribution to the GRL2020 Workshop vision and outcomes

GRL2020 AsiaThe 3rd GRL2020 workshop, which took place in Taipei, Taiwan on 23-25 February 2009, highlighted Knowledge Infrastructure related activities around the globe with special emphasis on Asia. Insight into domain-specific digital libraries, which might benefit from such Knowledge Infrastructures (KIs), was also given with presentations on Biodiversity, e-Heritage, Multiple Discipline Science and Climate change.

The vision for Global Research Libraries (GRLs) enabled by KIs was discussed with a number of important topics being established as vital for their realization.Participants recognized that the heterogeneous nature and diversity of domains involved make the realization of these KIs particularly challenging. Actions for dealing with these challenges were identified and include:

  • Inform and attain acknowledgement of the importance of KIs as a means to support GRLs from political decision makers on national, institutional and research organization levels;
  • Establish working groups in order to initiate focused discussion on key technological, organizational and policy aspects of KIs;
  • Analyze solutions with respect to the needs of global research areas such as humanities, biodiversity, health and environment in order to demonstrate their value in improving research performance and engagement of domains scientists.
