D4Science at EGEE'09 Conference

EGEE'09 conferenceThe D4Science project actively participated in the EGEE'09 conference held at the Hotel Barcelo Sants in Barcelona between the 21 and 25 September 2009. The conference was attended by more than 630 delegates from many different countries and focused on the future of grid computing in Europe and in particular the plans towards the new European Grid Initiative (EGI).

Five members of the D4Science consortium attended this international event, including the Project Director, the Technical Director, user community representatives and operational staff. They contributed to the conference agenda with 1) a Session and 2) a Demonstration.

  1. Session: On 22 September, D4Science organized a two hours session entitled "Deploying e- Infrastructures to enable multidisciplinary collaboration in Environmental Science". The session gathered experts from different organizations and was driven by presentations from the D4Science project, the ESFRI LifeWatch project, and the EGEE Earth Science user community Group. The commonalities and vision of the different projects were followed by a panel discussion to share ideas about possible solutions for "Federating Environmental Science resources" and the role of EGI as the proposed pathway to achieve such goal. The session was promising and opened the door to possible synergies between projects. The related documentation is available here under.
  2. Demo: D4Science was also present in the demonstration organized by the conference. The demonstration focused on the AquaMaps Virtual Research Environment (VRE). This VRE is currently deployed in the project production infrastructure and provides a powerful tool for the generation and manipulation of species distribution maps. The demonstration was entitled "A Virtual Research Environment for Species Distribution Map Generation and Management" and was shown to the conference delegates on 21 and 23 September 2009. A video supporting the demonstration was also prepared and can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhPISI-9O9A.
