BELIEF-II (Bringing Europe’s eLectronic Infrastructures to Expanding Frontiers - Phase II)
Project description
The BELIEF-II (April 2008 – April 2010) was an EU FP7 “e-Infrastructure - Capacity Programme” co-funded Coordination Action aimed at promoting the efficient and effective communication of results, networking and knowledge among EU e-Infrastructure projects and their users. In particular, it: a) provided – and will maintains for the lifetime of the D4Science-II project- a Digital Library (DL) which offers a uniform access to the material produced by these projects (e.g. deliverables, presentations, dissemination material); b) organized a number of events dedicated to stimulate networking among these projects; and c) offered a suite of Joint Communication Products, such as the e-Infrastructure News Magazine Zero-In, which was be used by other projects to disseminate their outcomes.
Collaboration
Collaboration between D4Science-II and BELIEF-II spanned over all three areas addressed by the project. It continued the path initiated by their predecessors, i.e. D4Science and BELIEF in the past years. In particular, D4Science-II exploits the BELIEF DL as a third-party service which not only disseminates the project’s documents but also manages and administers them by providing an appropriate repository service. Through specific Web submission forms D4Science registered users (authentication and authorization are managed by the BELIEF DL on behalf of D4Science) can upload project documents into the BELIEF repository. These documents are directly retrievable through the BELIEF DL and through the D4Science portal. This feature is enabled by a search capability embedded in the D4Science portal which allows D4Science web site to search for material of interest within the D4Science collection in the BELIEF DL.
D4Science-II participated in events organized by the BELIEF II project. In particular, in the reporting period, it attended:
• 7th e-Infrastructures Concertation Meeting - Infrastructures for eScience, 12-14 October 2009 - Brussels, Belgium (D4S & D4S-II);
• 5th BELIEF Symposium & CHPC National Meeting 2009 - Advancing research competitiveness through collaboration: Towards an integrated South African Cyber-Infrastructure - Johannesburg, South Africa - 7-9 December 2009 (D4S & D4S-II), with the presentation “The D4Science e-Infrastructure - Supporting eScience Communities” given by F. Zoppi (CNR);
• 6th BELIEF Brainstorming Workshop: Global Research Communities: success criteria for future impact - 24 & 25 February 2010 - Brussels, Belgium.
Plans for the future
As of today BELIEF-II project has ended its lifetime. As no sequel is currently running the collaboration in its original form has stalled. D4Science-II project looks for and awaits to actively support similar activities when they will become available. Furthermore D4Science-II will continue to support the sustained activities of BELIEF-II project, such as the Digital Library.
